Scro Visualizers (On Spec)

Software Used: Unreal Engine 5.1

My friend, Nick Scro, just released a music video titled “Is This What You Wanted",” and seeing the images of flowers in a warehouse in his video stuck with me and influenced me to try making an environment in Unreal Engine 5 with a similar vibe. I wanted to make it appear even dirtier and grungier, so I filled the space with even more dirt and grime, and brought the number of flowers down to just one to try and provide a stronger sense of contrast between subject and environment. The materials and models all came from Quixel Bridge.

These images were done with path tracer. While the animations could’ve been rendered with path tracer, I liked the images I was getting from lumen and made the decision that the extra time rendering was not worth the increase in image quality, in this case.

Casper Sun Summer Campaign 2023

Software Used: Adobe Photoshop, Cinema 4D, Unreal Engine 5.1

Casper Sun is a musician located in the 626 of Los Angeles, and we are collaborating on a set of promotional materials and visualizers for summer 2023.

These posters originated as a project in a class I took, Essential Typography, in which we created a poster for a musician, with an emphasis on the typography. So I made these posters as a series in Cinema 4D with light touching up in Photoshop. The astronaut is a model I got online and the dancing animations are from Mixamo. I had to slightly alter the uv’s on the model and then I added a simple cartoon shader with Cinema 4D’s standard material.

But the more I worked on it, the more I wanted to create more assets with this style and vibe. Having talked it over with Casper Sun, we agreed that there was a lot of different ways we could move forward with this look and atmosphere.

To get the visual look, I used a mix of cel shader plus outline post process material, along with a kuwahara filter for the background. The cel shaders were created manually using tutorials, and while I created a kuwahara filter manually as a post process material initially, it did not work reliably (it would constantly pop in and out). Eventually I settled on using the Chameleon blueprint, as it was faster and more modular.

Learning Live Compositing

Software Used: Unreal Engine 5.0

I’m learning how to use Unreal Engine to do live compositing in order to enhance my special fx skills. I made this on my own using Unreal Engine in one of ArtCenter’s studios with a green screen when I worked for them. I lit myself and keyed myself out using into a background I quickly made using some ultra low poly city buildings I made, as well as a kuwahara type effect on the background. This footage is intended just as a test. There are more skills I want to build on with this, including using virtual reality equipment to allow for the use of live camera tracking and live output.
